MASSILLON Police called to the scene of an attempted robbery found a man who said two people had just sprayed him with Mace.
But officers arrested him after a nearby resident revealed the young man had hidden a gun under a tarp covering his parked boat, Stark County Jail records show.
Colton W. Cross, 20, of the 200 block of Cayuga Avenue NW, was arrested at 12:50 a.m. Tuesday at Thorne Avenue NE and First Street. Officers also found a fake ID card in his wallet.
Police had been called at 12:30 a.m. to an attempted robbery, arriving to find Cross at the scene. According to the jail records, paramedics evaluated Cross after he told the officers he’d been sprayed with Mace by two people. Details of events that led to the reported assault and the identities of the reported individuals were not listed.
But an area resident told the officers about the gun. They recovered the small 5-shot revolver and then the fake identification card.
Cross was jailed on charges of grand theft and obstructing official business, and for having false identifying information.
He remained in the jail Tuesday, held in lieu of $25,750 bond pending a Massillon Municipal Court hearing.
